Work gets underway to make church more accessible

Church has builders in

A Wilmslow church now looks slightly different to passers-by and visitors as work has begun to make it more user friendly for the whole community.

The project was launched with a 'Hard Hat Sunday' service for those working on the building and some of those who will benefit from this major development of the church premises.

The work is to transform the undercroft beneath Wilmslow United Reformed Church on Alderley Road into a modern, flexible meeting space served by a small kitchen for a variety of activities, from small conversational groups to larger meetings.

This new space will also be a base for Wilmslow Youth, a joint venture between Wilmslow URC, Life Church Wilmslow and Wilmslow High School, which was set up a year ago. Earlier this year Wilmslow Youth received a Cheshire East public health grant of £9240 to support its work with teenagers.

Another part of the building work at Wilmslow URC will improve access to the front of the church and provide a new entrance on Chapel Lane. While work goes on until late August all weekday activities will be held in the other church halls onsite, including Monday morning Citizens Advice Bureau drop-in sessions.

Minister the Revd Kirsty Thorpe said "Our buildings are in the right place to serve those around us. We are looking forward to seeing the undercroft being used in new ways this autumn, especially by young people from Wilmslow High School. Meanwhile we hope everyone will be patient and understanding while we have a few months of disruption over the summer."
