Police warn residents are leaving themselves open to becoming victims of crime

Cheshire Police are warning local residents that they are increasing their chance of becoming victims of burglaries through careless mistakes or not locking doors and windows.

A number of recent burglaries have either been via hook and cane or resulted from windows and doors being left open.

PCSO Emma Darroch said "A hook and cane burglary occurs when the offender opens the letter box with a cane or other long object and retrieves house/car keys from a location close to the door and uses them to either enter the property or enter the vehicle and drive away from the address in it. This can easily be stopped by not placing keys nearby the door or in a location that can be seen. Place your keys in a safe place so that an opportunistic burglary cannot occur.

"Making sure that windows and doors especially on the ground floor of the property are locked is paramount to stopping a sneak in burglary, it can be simple like checking all the windows and doors are locked before going to bed especially if it has been a hot day. Look at your property and assess the easy access points into your property and make sure that windows/doors are locked, a burglary can occur within under a minute and this could potentially be eliminated through careful thought."

PCSO Darroch added "Please think about the security of your homes and properties and make simple crime prevention changes to prevent burglaries from occurring within your town."
