Over 250 arrested in 4 week crackdown on drink and drug driving

Cheshire Police is reminding the public about the dangers of drink and drug driving as its summer campaign comes to an end.

Operation Roadster was launched at the beginning of June to combat drivers under the influence of drink and drugs and to reduce the number of serious and fatal collisions across the county.

Over the past four weeks, officers have arrested 163 drink drivers compared with 135 during Operation Roadster last year.

Additionally 92 drug drivers were arrested, compared with 58 in 2015, the significant increase is being linked to more officers now trained to use the roadside testing kits introduced in March 2015.

The operation ran from 6th June to 10th July, during which time 1074 roadside breath tests were carried out.

Nine of these arrests took place in Wilmslow.

Inspector Steve Griffiths, of Cheshire's Roads Policing Unit, said: "Operation Roadster overall has been a success for the Roads Policing Unit. We have had more officers trained to use the roadside testing kits and we made a significant number of arrests throughout the county.

"However, it is disappointing to see people are still choosing to drive under the influence of drink and drugs and do not see the dangers they are putting not only themselves in, but others too.

"Drink and drug driving is extremely dangerous. It will affect your reaction time making it harder for you to judge your speed, judge the distance between you and other vehicles and notice hazards on the roads. All of this means you are more likely to be involved in a collision, which could be fatal.

"Even though Operation Roadster has come to a conclusion, officers will continue to work hard to reduce the number of drink and drug drivers in Cheshire, helping to make our roads safer."
