The Dogfather: And they call it puppy love ...

All our new autumn puppies will be starting their training this month. It's always an exciting event when a new batch of puppies come to class. It's a great honour to be part of their education and something I take very seriously. Get it right and you have a dog that will be welcome anywhere.

I have friends who invite me to take my dogs along when we visit. They know they will be sociable and respectful of their home. I took Murphy to the pub last night and he made so many friends I was struggling to get him away from his admirers.

Dogs like Murphy aren't born obedient and respectful it comes with training and a relationship that works for BOTH of us. Murphy and I have an unspoken contract: I respect him as a dog and he respects me as a person - simples.

It's a deal that works perfectly well for all my dogs.

Your dog's behaviour is determined by two things: Training (what he knows) and Relationship (who he believes to be in charge) AND everything starts with basic obedience.

That's where he learns the commands and works out his relationship with you. It makes no sense to expect a dog to obey you running around in the park if he doesn't listen when he's beside you. Turning him loose is simply crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.

Every dog, whatever it's intended purpose, must have good basic obedience and a sound relationship with its handler. That's the foundation for everything that follows.

This doesn't happen by chance. It requires dog and owner working together to agree the rules and create a relationship of mutual respect.

The best place for a dog to do this is in a controlled environment with other dogs.

Our next Puppy Foundation class starts this month. It's a chance to build a sound relationship with your dog that will serve you both for years to come.
