Plans have been submitted for the refurbishment of a town centre pub which closed in September.

The Spirit Pub Company has submitted an application for changes to The Swan, on Swan Street.

These include a new covered pergola with heating and lighting, new sections of external decked booth seating, the removal of a section of wall and replacement with bi-folding doors and new windows.

A spokesperson from the Spirit Pub Company said "We are currently awaiting planning permission to fully invest in this site with new experienced licensees."

The planning application can be viewed on the Cheshire East Council website by searching for planning reference 15/0282M. The deadline for submitting comments is 30th March and a decision is expected to be made by 4th April.

Excellent news, the plans look well-considered; the town-centre needs a traditional pub.

It is a shame to see this building currently boarded up and this will hopefully be better for the area when completed. A total external repaint will not go amiss.

Would make a great site for a, say, Hickory Smokehouse, rather than trying to foist one on the undeserving nimbies - like me ... - up at Dean Row.

Oh dear. It seems the owners have decided to ditch 'The Swan' name and have called the new venture the rather insipid new name 'Anthology'. I don't know whether Swan Street or the Swan came first but shedding such a historical name so deeply embedded in the locality is pure folly.
There is still time to reverse this decision or compromise and call it 'Anthology @ The Swan' or similar.

Well said,Oliver! As an inn,the building goes back over 200 years, existing for many years before the road was named. Why change it? Does the title 'The Swan' deter people? If the company is arguing it does, where is the evidence? And why move from something we are used to and can understand to what someone misguidedly thinks is a 'with-it' name? 'Anthology' is totally meaningless unless it is intended to be part of the breathaliser test or the building is to be a venue for poetry readings. Comment from the owners, please.

What is in a Pub name?
For several Centuries, ale houses were required to provide a pictorial representation of their name for the illiterate masses, often commerating sig historical events/dynasties eg Royal Oak, White Hart, Red Lion.
The Swan is simple and relates to the fact that swan's were regarded as 'property of the Monarch'.
The swan was also an heraldic symbol of the Lancastrian nobility.
I have no objection to new pubs with modern applicable names, but for me Anthology just means a collection of selected works & Slug & Lettuce def has humorous, but negative branding connotations.
We have had Albert Finney & Revolution bars ,so why not consider Alan Turing as a poss name?
