Wilmslow charity receives early Christmas present

Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary has received a surprise donation of £10,000.

Melanie Hay, a volunteer trustee, received the cheque on the charity's behalf from Animal Friends Pet Insurance, who are based in Wiltshire.

Melanie said: "It was absolutely incredible to receive the surprise donation from Animal Friends of £10K. I can't believe it, I'm in shock. We're a small charity in a local community and we rely on the goodwill of local donations which is very hard when people don't have spare money to contribute.

"To receive a donation of this size from people that care about our animals is just brilliant. The money will go towards providing a heating system for the animals in the isolation pen and for replacing the lighting in our barn. This money means so much to us and all the animals that we help to re-home."

Elaine Fairfax, Founder and Managing Director of Animal Friends Insurance said: "Christmas is a time to celebrate the gift of giving, and what better way than by supporting the work of such a wonderful animal charity. The Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary is thoroughly deserving of this donation. Not only do they work hard to rehome cats, horses and rabbits (and other small animals) in their care, they provide a permanent loving home for those animals who, for whatever reason, cannot be rehomed.

Elaine added "They rely on local donations and work so hard to support the animals in this area of Cheshire. I'm so glad we can support them and keep the animals safe this Christmas."

The Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary is run by the Humane Education Society, which was set up to educate the young and disadvantaged, using animal welfare as a platform for character development and emotional intelligence.

In 1927 the Humane Education Society started their work with rescued pit ponies then in the late 1960s they were able to create the Animal Sanctuary, taking in abandoned and unwanted animals from the surrounding area.

The Sanctuary relies solely on the community to continue their work of re-homing the unwanted, abandoned and sometimes sick animals that come into their care.

This is wonderful news and so well deserved.
So many good people work so hard to help the animals and Arthur Thompson and his son Ian who ran the Sanctuary for many years are probably cheering in heaven to see their work carried on with such devotion and so successfully.

Well said Sandra, for the work they do to aid animals it's fully deserved and as you say Arthur & Ian will have a smile on their faces.
