A group of travellers who have set up an illegal encampment on Earl Road Handforth are being allowed to stay for the rest of the week on "compassionate medical grounds".

They arrived at on the Council owned land adjacent to Handforth Dean Retail Park, a site which has proved popular with travellers in recent years, on Sunday, 28th September.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "A group of Travellers, consisting of five caravans, are currently based on Earl Road, Handforth. They arrived last Sunday.

"Council officers visited the location on Monday, and it came to light that one of the family had recently given birth and requires midwife and healthcare visits. Because of this they are being allowed to stay on site as a 'tolerated trespass', on compassionate medical grounds, until Monday (October 6).

"They will be served with a notice to quit by 5pm on Monday, October 6. If they have not left the location by that time we will move forward with the legal process to secure possession of the site."
