Fun day raises thousands for animal sanctuary

The Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary on Newgate Lane held a Fun Day at the weekend and managed to raise an incredible £3,200; complete with stalls, refreshments, face painting, a bouncy castle and tours of the animals, this day was a huge success.

The sanctuary aims to care for, protect and to re-home unwanted, abandoned, stray and ill-treated animals, while also caring for their veterinary needs. Those that can't be re-homed live their lives at the sanctuary. It was founded in 1926 by Arthur Thompson, and thanks to the hundreds of volunteers his legacy to care for these helpless animals has continued.

Melanie Hay, one of the volunteers helping at the event, explained that "in 2013 alone they managed to rehome 181 cats to suitable owners." But it's not just cats; the sanctuary looks after a multitude of animals: horses, donkeys, chickens and their onsite pig Eric.

"We also aim to educate people about animal welfare and provide a service to the community by offering the chance for people to work and volunteer at the sanctuary" said another spokesman.

However, it is a struggle. It costs about £450 a day to look after these animals and to run the sanctuary, but thanks to events such as this, and the generosity of the general public, the sanctuary is able to raise this money and continue to do the great work that they have been doing for so many years.

Not only did this Fun Day raise awareness of the sanctuary itself, but it brought the local community together, for an event which was enjoyed by everyone.
