Patching work is "part of phased approach"

Residents who are unhappy about the state their road has been left in following patching will be pleased to know the planned works are not complete.

Michael Morgan contacted wilmslow.co.uk after Westward Road was resurfaced earlier this month.

He said "What I don't understand is why they have carried out the work as they have, ie in a piecemeal fashion. As you can see from the photos there are small sections which have been left.

"It surely must have been easier to repair the whole road (which they did for Bourne Street and the other end of Westward Road - on the other side of Buckingham Road) - rather than cut out sections of the road and only repair part."

I contacted Cheshire East Council to enquire why the whole road had not been repaired, like Bourne Street.

Councillor David Topping, Cabinet member in charge of the environment, explained: "The work to enhance Westward Road forms part of a phased approach and is yet to be fully completed. It is called 'micro-asphalt surfacing' and consists of two stages.

"The first stage is to strengthen the weak spots in the road without fully resurfacing the area. This is then followed up by a smaller crew to fill the pothole-type defects. In September, two layers of micro-asphalt will be laid, one to regulate the existing surface and produce a platform to lay the final top coat on and the other for the final surface.

"This is a recognised and entirely suitable treatment for this location and I regret that our approach has not been made clear to nearby residents. I hope this helps."

So, our road being a similarly patched mess as Westward Road following a half day of black stuff being applied to the not-black road, I'm not sure from David Topping's explanation what will happen next (if anything). We have been told nothing except a leaflet through the door about the original 'patching' work.

Will the entire road be resurfaced over the black patches so it's all one colour? Is there an interim 'pothole filling' session before that happens? Or do we live with with a black and grey stripey road from now on?

Clarification would be good! And why can't our council give us, in plain English, an explanation of the process they have contracted so I and others wouldn't need to ask these questions?

And by the way... Well done for resurfacing Knutsford Road near the Church Road junction earlier this summer. But the worst bit of that road (immediately north of the resurfaced section, especially in the southbound direction) still causes me to ride my bicycle well out towards the centre of the road to avoid a buckled wheel or worse!
