A presentation on Zoom by Ian Black at 7.30pm
Ian will continue the Wilmslow Historical Society Zoom programme for the Society and interested members of the community.
His topic is Lucretius (99 - 55BC), who produced an epic poem called 'De Rerum Natura', (On the Nature of Things) which tries to explain all things natural. This work encompasses philosophy, ethics and science and has been profoundly influential, inspiring amongst others Isaac Newton, Thomas Jefferson and Charles Darwin.
Ian's talk focuses on the science rather than the poetry or philosophy and brings in two 'local' luminaries - Dalton and Rutherford.
Ian looks at why Lucretius wrote the book, how it was rediscovered in the 15th century and became a major influence in the Enlightenment. He will highlight some of the poet's key scientific theories, but it assumes no knowledge of science.
