A community grant of £12,945 has been awarded to Transition Wilmslow on behalf of local community group collective 'Discover Lindow'.
Discover Lindow 2024 is a festival of events – including walks, art events, talks, workshops and exhibitions – running from May to December 2024.
The events aim to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the finding of Lindow Man – Britain's most famous bog body – and encourage people to discover and enjoy Lindow Moss and its unique archaeological, historical and ecological heritage as its restoration commences.
The Discover Lindow events are organised by Transition Wilmslow, who are working with several local groups, including the Wilmslow Neighbourhood Plan Implementation Group, Wilmslow Civic Trust, Wilmslow Guild for Lifelong Learning, Wilmslow Library and the newly formed Lindow Moss Partnership and Friends of Lindow Moss. Other event supporters are Manchester University, MMU, Manchester Museum and the British Museum (current home of Lindow Man).
The Wilmslow Town Council grant will fund the design of online and printed information and maps for a new 3.5-mile 'Lindow Moss Heritage' Walk, which will provide long-term benefits to Wilmslow residents and visitors. It will also fund an animated family-friendly version of the walk, featuring performers, sound and entertainment.
Other elements of the festival that will be funded or partially funded by the Town Council grant will be:
- The designing and printing an art trail map for 'Art on the Moss' (an art trail displayed around the Moss), plus funding materials for the willow and woodwork art installations and supporting the Art on the Moss launch event,
- A Bioblitz / Plant hunt event,
- Promotion of the festival of events online and through printed materials,
- Provision of art materials for a collaborative art project by students from all primary schools and Wilmslow High School, which will be placed temporarily on Lindow Moss as part of Art on the Moss.
Town Mayor, Councillor Jon Newell, said, "We are delighted to sponsor Discover Lindow 2024.
"The Town Council have been involved in various Lindow Moss projects, including being one of the founding members of the recently-formed Lindow Moss Landscape Partnership and funding the appointment of Groundwork, who recently received a grant of £250,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund on behalf of the Lindow Moss Landscape Partnership.
"We recognise how important the Moss is and are grateful to Transition Wilmslow and the partnering Discover Lindow groups, who have put so much time and effort into planning and organising a wide variety of events to mark this significant year.
"We encourage residents to look at the vast programme of events and get involved in Discover Lindow 2024; there is an event for everyone."
