Help Wilmslow go for gold

Judges will be in town on Thursday, 10th July, to assess Wilmslow's entry in the 2014 Britain in Bloom competition and local residents and businesses are being urged to help spruce up Wilmslow ready for the inspection.

The judges will be considering the quality and imagination of town planting, the cleanliness of the town centre and a number of softer features, such as community participation, environmental quality and the atmosphere in the town, as well as the obvious horticultural achievements.

Last year Wilmslow achieved a silver medal in Europe's largest community gardening campaign and this year they are aiming for a better grade.

The theme for this year is 'Growing for Gold' to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the In Bloom competition.

The summer planting organised by the Town Council and delivered by Oak Nurseries, will celebrate this scheme and Incredible Edible, with support from Turners Nurseries, are planting yellow and orange varieties of herbs, fruit, vegetables and a mixture of golden, edible flowers.

Wilmslow Business Group are supporting the initiative and over thirty businesses have already volunteered to plant the front of their premises with edible and floral planters and two significant landlords will be decorating their premises with planters and other golden decorations.

To cap it all the entrants to the Wilmslow Dean Rotary Scarecrow Festival are being encouraged to incorporate the golden theme into their models.

Eight local schools will be creating golden planters and the children at Pepperberry Day Nursery have planted and are now taking care of the sunflowers seeds, donated by RHS, ready to show the judges in July.

New judge to Wilmslow David Bielawski, will accompany John Bilsborough, who has visited the town for the previous two years.

The judges will start their tour at Lindow Common and progress through the town including a walk along Grove Street and St Bartholomew's Church, finishing with tea and cakes in The Carrs. They will meet the rangers, members of the Business Group, the Town Council, Incredible Edible, Friends of the Carrs, Wilmslow Dean Rotary and the Clean Team, among others.

Cllr Ellie Brookes explained, "Residents can amplify the whole effect by adding gold themed hanging baskets and additional gold planting and local businesses could also help by pulling weeds from the area around their shop fronts.

"Residents can also show their support by planting their house fronts with the golden colour scheme, or volunteering with Incredible Edible or the Clean Team."

Helen Yates of Incredible Edible added "Join in the event and help Wilmslow achieve a golden glow."

If the judges are starting at Lindow Common I suggest they put up a huge yellow fence round it then we can hide the eyesore that Cheshire East has made of it!
Otherwise I think the whole of Wilmslow looks wonderful with its planters and flower beds, it gives me pleasure every day!
