Basketball: Double triumph for Wilmslow Wizards

Wilmslow Wizards men's basketball team completed the league and play off double, winning 45 - 29 against league runners up the Supersonics of Warrington. The play offs panned out so that the top two teams from this season met at the final showdown, which made for a competitive contest.

The game was tight for the first quarter with both teams working hard... on the defensive end as to not give up any kind of advantage to the opposition. It was a low scoring affair until the introduction of Wizards point guard Jason Teagle; who saved his best game of the campaign for the big occasion, hitting three field goals in quick succession to fire Wizards in to the lead.

With impetus from the bench the Wizards upped the intensity on both ends of the floor, with two big blocks from centre, Alex Paredes. This forced the Supersonics to think twice about trying to attack the basket from close range, resulting in them taking difficult long range shots under pressure from a committed Wizards defence. This created turnover possession and fast break opportunities for Wilmslow to capitalise on, which Compton Harry did, to stretch their lead to 11 before the half time break.

As both sides caught their breath after a frantic first period, an air of déjà vu was starting to descend on the Warrington Ball Hall. The Wizards had been in exactly the same position before against the Supersonics in the final run of games of the regular season, however this time they were not about to let their lead or a dream of a back to back double slip away.

MVP Teagle started the second half, after making such a valuable contribution from the bench in the first, and continued from where he left off scoring a 3 pointer early in the second to quash any thoughts of another 'sonics upset!

The second half was a total team performance, with a lot of grit from the Wizards to deny the Supersonics any opportunity to get back in to the game.

The Wizards ran the bench well to keep up the pressure throughout the half and ensure that they brought the play off trophy back to Wilmslow for a second straight year.
