Wilmslow Town Council has agreed to award a grant to the local group of volunteers who tend to community plots in the town and spearheaded Wimslow's entry into the RHS In Bloom competition.

Recommending the grant application for approval, Cllr Ellie Brooks said "Incredible Edible have been a very positive force in Wilmslow over the last two years and have made a big contribution to the town. Last year we helped them with funding, which in my view was money well spent.

"This year's application is for a modest £1665 which will be used to improve the look and feel of our town and used to coordinate with In Bloom colour scheme. As well as gathering volunteers they've involved as many groups in the town as possible. They're also crucial to our In Bloom aspirations."

Cllr Jim Crockatt pointed out that certain areas were mentioned in the application and requested that Summerfields shopping centre is also included in their plans as it "needs uplifting a bit".

The grant was approved unanimously by the Town Council.

Incredible Edible was launched in Wilmslow by Helen Yates in 2011. For the past two years they have picked up a silver medal award in the RHS North West in Bloom competition thanks to all the hard work of local businesses, community groups, Incredible Edible volunteers and Wilmslow Town Council who provided the town centre planters.

This year, the town's entry is stepping up a gear and the Wilmslow In Bloom Committee has grown to include several members from Wilmslow Town Council, business partners from across town and representatives from Friends of the Carrs and Rotary with a view to improving on the silver award.

The 'Britain in Bloom' movement is 50 years old this year so the theme for 2014 is 'Growing for Gold'. Wilmslow will adopt a colour scheme of gold yellow and red - although a request for Cheshire East Council's planting to tie in with these colours has unfortunatley been refused because they placed their orders in November/December time and had already chosen red, white and blue for the whole borough to help mark the centenary of the First World War starting.
