Travellers have once again set up camp on Earl Road in Handforth.

The latest group of travellers to base themselves on the council owned land, adjacent to the Handforth Dean retail park, arrived on Tuesday, 18th February. Having moved two large tree stumps, which the Council had placed across the road, to gain access to the cul de sac.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "A group of Travellers, consisting of nine caravans and 11 vehicles are currently based on Earl Road, Handforth. They arrived in the early hours of Tuesday, February 18.

"Council officers have visited the location and we are now moving forward with the legal process to secure possession of the site.

"We served the Travellers, yesterday (Thursday), with a notice to quit by Monday. If they do not leave the site we will seek a court order to secure repossession."

Mmmm... so we can't keep them off land they're legally not allowed on and think that they won't abuse the 'one caravan' site at the top of Moor Lane?

I work in the building in the picture so understand the mess they leave behind. If the council did not want them to return they could do more than put half a tree in the way. This didn't work in December so obviously they would be back. Not really sure what more can be done. I would like to think if it was preventable then they wouldn't be back!

Deja vu.

The council keep using the same techniques and surprise surprise they keep failing. When are they going to use their brains and use preventative techniques instead?

Perhaps they can block them in preventing them from moving their vehicles until they are kicked out. That way they can't use them to go off knocking on doors seeking tax free work.

James CEC are using their brains. Their brains tell them that the more they let "illegal" traveller sites spring up and then have to be removed, the sooner the people of Cheshire East will let them put up "legal" traveller sites, which is what they want. Having said that, the limitations of CEC's approach is that all the evidence is that "legal" sites do not stop other "illegal" sites springing up.

In many ways this is our fault, the residents of the UK. We have allowed ourselves to be governed by a liberal neocon elite who have signed us up to a raft of UN Agenda, EU and NGO treaties on everything from the rights of minority interest groups, environmental, social planning and climate change. This focused group elite that wants to form a European Super State, one World Government are not interested in our concerns and worries. They know what's best for us.

So here we are Gypsy travellers rocking up and laughing in our faces, councils ignoring our wishes on building development and disregarding all the regulations when they want to build a waste plant (not one person prosecuted). Bankers bringing the country to its knees. Newspapers hacking the phones and bribing police, police accepting the bribes, gay marriage, flooding on the Somerset levels, going into illegal wars in Iraq, sending troops without the correct equipment, immigration, secret family courts - the list is endless.

Yet you park illegally, build an extension six inches to high, leave your bin out to long, or don't fill out your census form on time. Some 'official' will be down on you like a town of bricks. Welcome to modern Britain.

The council has many options open to it to close a road, or restrict access, they also have a degree of control over land owners to comply to various rules and regulations........ So... I suppose its only a matter of time before the travellers are involved in a collision with the tree stumps obstructing the road, need medical attention ( previous threads ).. and then sue the council for causing the accident placing un marked / un lit obstruction..on public highway.. and catch 22... council in the dock,... travellers in the clear.... and need to stay longer whilst their medical needs are attended.
(similarly their John Lewis / Tesco / Next needs )...... So in the meantime direct the travellers to the council offices car parks, disused buildings............. Come on council... get smarter... and quicker.be fair to the ECHR rights of ALL.

Why don't the council put in a reception desk and a "Have A Nice Stay" sign in preparation for the summer influx that this site will get.

Meanwhile, expect Cheshire Constabulary to issue a warning next week about rogue tradesmen in the area and a hefty bill to clean up the debris left behind in this road.

Yes - it's Groundhog day again.

Is this not a public highway? If so they are causing an obstruction with their vehicles which means they can be removed especially as they appear to be parked on double yellow lines. The vehicle owner (if traceable) can be allocated points on his/her licence. If these people are treated differently to the rest of us it is discrimination by the council and those appointed to uphold the law!

@Simon Worthington

Ah, but they have an "I'm a Romany Traveler, Get Me Out of Jail Free" card on them.

Anyway, you know laws only apply to people with houses who pay tax and who can be bothered to pay fines too.

Plus it's cold and wet at the moment and our police have warmer things to do - like attend community liaison meetings. At which, depending on how they feel, they will either tell us they are doing everything possible to resolve this issue or else that it's Cheshire East's problem, not theirs.

Either way, nothing actually gets done except waste ever more taxpayers cash on this repeated problem.

Totally agree with all of that Simon and have spent numerous hours on the phone arguing the fact with Cheshire Police and CEC.
However they both always have an excuse why not to do something, try it yourself. If you do, get the job number and keep ringing back for a progress report. I don't need to tell you what that will be.

Where is the backbone in our "can't do" council? They can't protect the green belt, they can't stop travellers setting up camp on public land, they can't stop chuggers harassing shoppers on the high street, they can't come up with a single creative idea to encourage business in the town and should you wish to add a modest improvement to your home, a man from the council will come round and give you a huge list of things you can't do to your own property. Why are we bothering to pay astronomical amounts of council tax to a committee that takes great pride in telling us what it can't do? They are costing us millions of pounds and yet repeatedly ignore the views of those they claim to represent. Why are we financing a "can't do" council?

A tree will hardly stop those that have their own diggers and who offer road maintenance and driveway/garden services! Maybe we should look into why they are here in the first place...a big incentive is because they are getting work. Walk past and observe their trucks/vans and the 'advertising' of their services is evident and unfortunately they have a phone number, mobile number and often an 'office' address so to most looking for a local tradesman will appear legit. To dissuade them from camping locally work needs to dry up!

Looks like they've moved on.

"Bye bye Mr Traveller see you again next month".
