Lovely Jubbly: Boycie helps light up Wilmslow

Hundreds of people, young and old, gathered in Bank Square this evening to see the Wilmslow Christmas lights switched on by John Challis (Boycie from Only Fools and Horses) and Jayne Bickerton (from Coronation Street).

Beforehand, crowds lined the streets to watch Santa proceed through the town centre on his sleigh drawn by some of his favourite reindeer, much to the delight of all the children.

Santa was joined on his sleigh by Lara Plant, 7, and her friend Ava Forrest. Lara was the lucky winner of the competition to design a new Christmas light decoration for the town centre and her winning design was lit up for everyone to see at Bank Square.

The parade, which was accompanied by Styal Brass Marching Band and members of the Wilmslow and Alderley Edge Musical Theatre Company, finished at Banks Square where the crowd were entertained with performances from Cheshire A Cappella, Wilmslow High School Choir and Gorsey Bank Primary School Choir.

Then John Challis and Jayne Bickerton, who are performing Dick Whittington at Stockport Plaza next month, joined Father Christmas on stage to switch on the Wilmslow Christmas lights.

The event was organised and funded by the Town Council and the evening's entertainment was compered by Wilmslow resident Erik Garner.
