Voluntary group to hold first clean up events

Cheshire East-20131125-00260

The recently formed Wilmslow Clean Team is preparing to hold their first events to help keep the town clean.

Following a public meeting in October around 20 volunteers came forward to join the group and decided to run task sessions on the first Wednesday and following Saturday of each month, starting in December.

In addition to those that attended the meeting, approximately another 20 people have come forward who are willing to give some time when available. There are also various local voluntary groups willing to lend a hand.

Vickie Riley, who is heading up the voluntary group, said "The local girl guides, Wilmslow High School and The Emerson Group have pledged their help in some way. I expect the school and guides will run their own task sessions outside of our scheduled ones at a more suitable time to them but using our equipment."

She added "I applied for funding via the Town Council and the full amount requested (approx £1600.00) was awarded to the group to cover the purchase of 50 or more litter picking equipment sets and the necessary insurances."

Town Councillor Joan McCance said "We are impressed and grateful to Vicki and her team. We can see that litter is still a problem in Wilmslow and we all hope that the activities of the Team will encourage people to dispose of litter responsibly."

People are very welcome to join the group who will meet in Bank Square at 10am on Wednesday 4th and Saturday 7th December, when they will focus on visible areas in the town centre.

Sorry. Do we now have to keep our town clean ourselves ? I thought that is what I paid some of my council tax for.

I believe it demonstrates that local residents are willing to invest time and effort to maintain their environment.

Totally agree with Kathryn. These 'do gooders, do not help the litter situation in the long term.We need to fight to get better services from CEC.
What's next? Empty our own bins?!

The litter situation in the long term can only be helped by stopping the litterers dropping it in the first place. Perhaps if people didn't just throw their litter on our streets, then groups like this, in addition to the council, would not be necessary.
In an 'ideal' world people would dispose of it properly or the council would just pick it all up. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the council funds are stretched to their limit and there is no additional money to have full time litter pickers. These are not a team of do-gooders, they are a team of people willing to give a little back to their community who do not carry the attitude of 'it being someone else's problem'. The group does not intend on just picking up litter, the groups longer term aim is to educate and raise awareness of dropping it in the first place. Why should it be the entirely the councils responsibility to pick up litter that some lazy person cannot be bothered to put in the bin? Take a bit of pride in your community people, put your litter in the bin!
