Cricket: Cup final win for the Squirrels

Trophy Presentation

Cheshire Alliance 1st XI League Cup Final.

Wilmslow CC 108 for 8 beat Westminster Park 104 all out.

At the trophy presentation, victorious skipper Jay Patel spoke of the indomitable spirit within the Wilmslow CC squad, whilst highlighting an unnerving propensity to make things as difficult as possible.

A superb bowling and fielding performance saw the Squirrels bowl out a powerful Park batting line up in just 28 over's for a seemingly paltry 104. Liam Aspinall took a wicket with his first ball and this set the tone, before change bowlers Oli Pickup 4 for 45 and Patel himself with 4 for 25 did the real damage. Haslington CC hosted this final; the wicket is a belter, the outfield fast and extensive. Wilmslow had excelled with the ball, done the graft, they just needed to finish the job.

Pressure is an extraordinary leveller, all that was required was a couple of partnerships and a few boundaries. To those sat viewing, it seemed every time something like this started, a wicket fell. With only 10 runs to win, a crazy run out for the 8th wicket once again put everything on a knife edge. The bowlers Pickup and Aspinall eventually saw it through, but the victory owed most to a patient and reserved 42 from MOM Adam Dixon.

There was another win for the 1st XI on Saturday, as they hosted Ellesmere Port. There were runs again for Dixon with 66, Rob Herriott continued his good run with 34 as the hosts posted 215 for 7. The in form Liam Aspinall then took 6 for 23 in a superb opening spell. The visitors never recovered, and were all out for 66.

The 2nd XI are on a miserable run and lost by 160 runs at Glazebury. The highlights were a superb senior wicketkeeping debut from Nathan Woodhouse and 5 for 52 from the Chairman. The 2nd XI now need to regroup and escape relegation after losing nine on the bounce.
