Join guided walks on Handforth's meadows

HandforthMeadows

A series of free guided walks will take place on Handforth's meadows over the coming weeks offering people the opportunity to discover the local green space where you can fly model aircraft, fish in the ponds, bird watch or just walk and enjoy the wildlife and fauna.

The walks have been organised by Hands of Handforth Green Belt, a campaign run by Handforth residents to protect the village from unnecessary development, with support from the Smithy Model Aircraft Club and local residents to raise awareness of the threatened Green belt Land.

The guided walks will take place on Saturday 27th July, 10th August and 24th August. They will offer two walks around and across Handforth's meadows, both of which are suitable for children and dogs and will each take an hour or so.

Option one will be a gentle amble through the fields via the ponds to the airfield whilst option two will be a longer more strenuous walk via the hall, wood and Blossoms Lane. A wildlife and fauna spot list will be provided.

Walkers will meet at the Handforth Dean car park at 11am, in the orange zone (near the petrol station). Organisers will be there to meet you with 6 red balloons on a stick.

Smithy Model Aircraft Club members will have a display on the airfield at the end of the walk and people are encouraged to bring their kite along to fly - there will prizes for the children for the best home made and highest flying kites. There is also an area for picnics.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended.

Went on the first walk this last Saturday - a lovely morning, really nice group of people, and lots to see with other people's eyes too. Butterflies galore, lots of signs of the badgers, lilies in flower, and what an asset to have the other side of the bypass to make our area greener.....

We were delighted that so many people joined us for the walks, both locals from Wilmslow, Heald Green, and Handforth, and also from further afield; Hazel Grove and Manchester. Many attending were interested in discovering new walks in the area, others in seeing where CEC's proposed new settlement will be sited. We were able to fill in some of the background history of the area used during WW1 and WW2 and tell of some local folk law (including a local ghost story) along the way.

It was a beautiful sunny day with stunning views to the Peak District. Tiny thumbnail sized toads and frogs and many of the different flower species and butterflies were identified along the route from the nature spotting list we provided.

The walk last about an hour taking in Hall Wood and Blossoms Lane and some of the ponds on Handforth Meadows.

Smithy Model Aircraft Club put on a wonderful display with over 15 model aircraft ready to fly from jets (reaching up to 60mph) to the more majestic byplanes, where we stopped to enjoy the display and our picnic lunch under the gazebo's. A separate area was cordoned off children to fly kites.

The next walks are on Saturday 10th and 24th August, starting from the Orange Zone car park (adjacent to the petrol station) at Handforth Dean at 11am.
