A new organiser has been appointed to take over the Poppy Appeal for Wilmslow.

Kate Hewison will be replacing Jim McDermott from Lacey Green, who retired from the role after 43 years.

Kate has lived on Chapel Lane with her husband for the past 11 years, having moved up to Wilmslow from London. She has been supporting the Wilmslow Poppy Appeal for the past 8 years by selling poppies, delivering boxes and counting money.

Kate has two sons, one at St Anne's Fulshaw and one at Wilmslow High School, both of whom have helped her sell poppies in the town centre.

Kate told wilmslow.co.uk "I offered to help as my dad was in WW2, he was injured and held as a prisoner of war in Poland for 5 years. My brother was in the army and served in Ireland and my nephew was in the army and served in Iraq.

"The British Legion helped my family both emotionally and financially while I was growing up and my dad found lots of friendships and comfort at his local British Legion Club.

"I am looking forward to November and would really welcome any new 'Poppy Pals' who can spare a few hours during the main Poppy Collecting fortnight and would like to join the existing members of the Wilmslow Poppy team."

Kate is pictured above with Khumi Burton who has been appointed as the County Poppy Appeal Coordinator for East Cheshire, which covers about 25 towns.

Khumi explained "My role is to support/help if needed all the Poppy Appeal Organisers in East Cheshire during the run up to the 2 weeks in November. It is a challenge for a very good and worthwhile cause."

Retired organiser Jim McDermott, 86, attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace last month, in recognition of his long service. Jim has lived in Lacey Green since 1947 and served in the Artillery Regiment with postings in Egypt and Palestine.
