Wilmslow Town Council is already looking ahead to Christmas and following on from the success of last year's event they have voted unanimously to have a reindeer parade again for the Christmas light switch on.

They agreed at this week's meeting to allocate a budget of £10,000 for the light switch on event. Last year they spent £8000 and although they do not intend to spend any more this year they have built in some slack.

Cllr Don Glover questioned whether £10,000 was not an awful lot of money to spend on this event.

Cllr Ruth McNulty responded "Wilmslow was packed with happy people last year"

Cllr Martin Watkins added "I would not wish to see Wilmslow Town Council at Christmas time cast in the role of Scrooge."

The Town Council has also set aside £20,000 to purchase more Christmas lights for additional trees, following a proposal from Cllr Gary Barton to double the budget for this year.

Cllr Ruth McNulty explained "Our strategy is that we decorate more and more trees so when the current lamp column decorations fade away they will not be replaced. In the long term there will be less of an impact on our precept."

Cllr Don Glover responded "I think it is good that we do have these permanent ones, not have to put them up, take them down and store them for a year - I think that was a bad choice."

Last year the Town Council purchased lights for another six trees (four at Bank Square and two on Alderley Road) at a cost of £9200.

In addition to the Christmas tree which is usually located at Bank Square, a tree will also be erected near to the library and, having previously agreed to put a power supply in at Morley Green, the Town Council will light an existing tree which is growing at Morley Green.
