Police target speeding motorists on Morley Green Road

Following complaints from local residents the police have been on Morley Green Road this week measuring the speed of passing vehicles.

Residents of Morley Green Road highlighted the problem of excessive speeding in the area at a recent Police Focus meeting. Since then the police have carried out enforcement on a dozen occasions which has resulted in over 30 tickets being issued and hundreds of warning letters being sent out.

Local resident Helen Brearley and some of her neighbours have formed a Community Speed Watch group and been trained in the use of a speed gun.

Helen explained "At certain times of the day the road is very busy and at other times it is very quiet which is why it is so dangerous as it is so unpredictable."

She added "We would love some proper signage and traffic calming measures. There is only pavement on one side of the road and you have to cross the road at four points because the pavement disappears. My eldest is 12 and I wouldn't want him crossing the road because it is so unpredictable.

"Now we have attended the Police Focus meeting we don't want to lose momentum because everyone has been talking about it but nobody does anything about it. Everyone needs to be passionate about solving it, the police, Council and residents and we need to come together."

Sgt Andy Miller, who was stopping speeding vehicles on Morley Green Road yesterday, said "From our perspective speeding is more of a problem on Morley Green Road, it has consistently come out with the highest number of speeding vehicles.

"We have decided to take a proactive and problem solving approach to speeding and we are working with Cheshire East Council, Wilmslow Town Council and local residents in order to see what we can do to make it more difficult to speed on the road by a mixture of enforcement and community work."

The mobile speed indicator device (SID) has been placed in the Morley Green area on three occasions recently and the data collected showed that over 90% of vehicles exceed the 30mph speed limit on this road.

Wilmslow Local Area Partnership (LAP) will be bringing together representatives from Cheshire East Council, Wilmslow Town Council and the police to look at speeding issues around Wilmslow and Morley Green Road will be flagged as a priority.

I keep seeing this road mentioned in various local press. It seems to get a lot of attention for a road with only around 30 houses in total?

What does the accident data suggest? would Police not be better placed targeting roads where there are a higher rate of accidents or injuries?

Morley Green Road is finally getting some attention after many years of campaigning by its residents. The data gathered over the last 18mths by Wilmslow Town Council clearly shows what the residents have been saying for years. The road is heavily used, not only by those travelling to Mobberley but those who use it as cut through to miss the traffic on Altrincham Road. (Made significantly worse since the Water Building has been under construction). The Speed Indication Device which has been placed on our road a number of times has consistently shown that 91% of those vehicles will exceed the speed limit, the highest recorded speed on these occasions have been in excess of 70 miles per hour. I would like to suggest that anyone who doubts the problems the residents face should walk the road, try it as I do with two children it is certainly not for the faint hearted. You will find the little bit of pavement we do have is narrow and overgrown and you will have to cross a minimum of 4 times in order to use it. Or maybe try pulling out of your own home to find a car careering around the corner at 60 miles per hour. I do not have access to police accident data but having only lived on the road a relatively short time I can certainly share my experience. Two parked cars written off, bus stop destroyed, Garden wall destroyed, head on collision directly outside my house, a vehicle straight through a neighbours gates only just missing the front of her home. I would suggest to the gentlemen who appears to make light of the problems Morley Green residents face, and suggests police enforcement would be better placed elsewhere. That he goes through the years of campaigning and data collection the residents of Morley have, and then I expect he too would eventually get the Police, Council and residents finally working together to solve the problem.

I know some of recent collisions mentioned here were in fact due to the lack of gritting during the freeze and it was the same situation all over the county not just on Morley green Road.
