Speeding on Morley Green Road needs sorting

Residents of Morley Green Road attended a recent Police Focus meeting to air their views about excessive speeding in the area.

The meeting, held at Wilmslow High School last month, was initially scheduled to take place in the school's meeting room. However, so many members of the public attended that the meeting had to be moved to the hall.

Ninety per cent of those who attended were there to protest about speeding in the Morley Green Road area, prominent amongst this group was local resident and Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson.

In addition to excessive speeding, the residents raised concerns about overweight vehicles using the road where there is a weight restriction, vehicles blocking access to properties and the switching off of the street lights on the A538 Altrincham Road.

Cllr Martin Watkins, of Wilmslow Town Council attended the meeting. He said "What became apparent is that these residents believe they are not being heard."

He added "These residents need to believe that we are listening to what their concerns are. We know that there is a problem in the Morley Green area, the excessive speed is greater than anywhere else where we've put the mobile speed device."

The mobile speed device (SID), which Wilmslow Town Council purchased last year, has been placed in the Morley Green area on three occasions in recent months. The data from which shows that not only do over 90% of vehicles exceed the speed limit but the 30 mph limit is exceeded by a greater percentage than anywhere else monitored by the SID.

The average speed recorded in March this year was 38.8 mph with the highest speed recorded being 76 mph. The exercise was repeated the following month when the average speed was 37.5 mph and the highest speed 74 mph.

Sgt Andy Miller told councillors "It would be a good idea for a number of people with certain specialities to get together to discuss what the best thing is for Morley Green Road.

"We need to look at signage, we need to look at traffic calming, we need to look at speed enforcement. Numerous people have a part to play."

Martin Watkins continued "What came out of this meeting was that there are lots of interested parties, the residents, police, Cheshire East and ourselves. We've all got an interest but what we not doing is talking to each other and sorting out what the problem is and this is what we've got to do."

Cheshire Police have carried out enforcement on Morley Green Road on a number of days recently and are looking to blitz the area.

Sgt Miller confirmed at the last Town Council meeting that nine people were stopped for speeding in one day recently and six on the previous day.

Wilmslow Town Council resolved to ask the Local Area Partnership to bring together the agencies that could influence this matter and look at speeding in the town, prioritising Morley Green Road.

Cllr Ruth McNulty commented "We have been kicking this subject into the long grass for quite some time and I think we need to take it by the throat and shake it."

I don't know this road well but I wonder if anyone has considered the possibility that the reason the speed limit is exceeded so much is that it is inappropriately low.

We have lived on Morley Green Road for 3 years. During that time we have had 2 cars written off both parked outside our house. One of which went through our garden wall and missed the house by 2 feet. We have seen 2 pets killed that we know of, and crashes are a monthly occurrence. So in response to the low speed limit maybe it is simply not being enforced as effectively as it could be?

Why does Morley have a 40 and a 30mph speed limit to its roads. Both are similar roads and the 40mph road has a sharp bend with farm mud on it. Surely they should have the same limit.
