The 2nd June marks the 60th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation at Westminster Abbey and Handforth Station is marking the event by flying a new flag designed by pupils at St Benedict's primary school.

The striking flag, fit for a Queen, was raised with the school children in glorious sunshine on the 1st of May. The children will also be working on artwork to be displayed within the station booking hall.

Jane Gornell of St Benedict's said: "St Benedict's School Student Council has thoroughly enjoyed working with the Friends of Handforth Station to design a flag and develop artwork to be displayed within the station to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation.

"Reception class have designed Coronation Crowns to be hung from the ceiling of the ticket office and Year 2 have designed Regal Silhouettes to be displayed inside the perspex noticeboard.

"The project has encouraged the children to consider their contribution to enhancing the community and further supported their citizenship skills. St Benedict's pupils would appreciate further invitations to be involved in community projects."

Mike Bishop, Chairman of the Friends of Handforth Station added "It is great to have St Benedict's pupils back on the station with their Coronation Flag and we can't wait for their Crown sculptures to be displayed in the ticket office shortly.

"We continue to look for partnerships with people of all ages in our community to enrich the station environment further. We still have a vacant flagpole and now's the chance to see your design fluttering in the breeze."

The Friends group have a station Spring Clean event planned for 10am to 12noon on Saturday 18th May and would welcome assistance from anyone.
