Trip to town for rare Longhorn cattle

Families are being invited to come and meet Wilmslow's very own pedigree herd of rare breed Longhorn cattle to celebrate the herd's 25th anniversary.

The 80-strong herd graze in the Bollin Valley, helping to improve the local habitat for wildlife and keeping the coarse grasses under control.

One of the new-born calves will be on show with its mother, who will also be accompanied by the herd bull, during the event on Saturday June 1st, in the garden area near Wilmslow Library.

Councillor Rod Menlove, who chairs the Longhorn action group, said: "This is the ideal opportunity for local children and their parents to get a really close-up view of these huge yet docile animals.

"There will be lots of free goodies for the kids and plenty of photo opportunities. There aren't many urban areas that can boast having a rare breed in a natural environment so close to the town centre.

"Our Longhorns provide a valuable ecological service and what better excuse to show them off and celebrate their 25th anniversary."

The herd is based at Oakwood Farm on Styal Road and are under the management of the Bollin Valley Partnership (BVP).

Their rangers will be on hand to answer any questions and promote the herd's future appearance at the Wilmslow Show on Sunday, July 14th.
