Celebrations to mark Lindow Common's 50th year

A series of events are planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lindow Common being designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The significance of the rare lowland heathland was recognised in 1963 when it was awarded the status of a SSSI.

Wilmslow is one of only a few towns privileged to have its own SSSI. Lowland heathland is a habitat rarer than tropical rainforest and Lindow Common is one of the finest examples in North West England.

The programme kicks off with ranger guided walks around this fascinating site at the start of April, each of which will last two hours.

On the walks the ranger Paul Hughes will not only point out areas of natural interest but also the activities of the wildlife in early April as well as describing the on-going work to protect and maintain this valuable site. There will be ample opportunity for members of the public to ask questions.

Cllr Rod Menlove who chairs the Common Advisory Group said "There is low awareness locally of this Wilmslow hidden jewel and its status as a site of regional and national importance. This 50th Anniversary is a golden opportunity for us to raise the profile of the Common. We urge residents to visit the site either casually or on one of the special event days that will take place during the year."

Ranger Paul Hughes said "We need to protect the fauna and flora and to do this are in a long term project, under the guidance of Natural England, to return the Common to the condition of 5000 years ago. Courtesy of Wilmslow Town Council we now have the funding for extra detailed notice boards and these will help our visitors to understand the importance of the Common and the rich variety of plants and small animals."

You can explore Lindow Common, is a precious natural habitat for a wide variety of small wildlife and a great number of rare plants, on Wednesday 3rd April either at 10am or 2pm or on Sunday 7 April at 2pm.

Parts of the site may be muddy, so please wear suitable footwear. Families are welcome but this guided walk is not suitable for dogs. The group will assemble in the large car park on Racecourse Road, off Altrincham Road opposite the Boddington Arms.
