Wizards conjure championship win

Men's Champions March 2013

The Wilmslow Wizards capped a dream debut season in Cheshire Basketball’s Premier Competition on Tuesday night, capturing a Conference and Play Offs double by beating the Warrington Cheetahs 31 - 24 in a tight affair at the Warrington Ball Hall.

The Play Off Final was teed up nicely with the Conference topping Wizards taking on the form team from the back end of the regular season in the shape of the Cheetahs.

The Wizards, led by their player /coach; former NBA Summer League and Manchester Giants star John Trezvant, demonstrated their determination to take home the silverware from the tip off, competing hard to break down the Cheetah’s defence and take an early lead from the first possession.

From that point on defence was the order of the night for both teams and as a consequence a scrappy, low scoring contest ensued, however the Wizards never really looked like relinquishing their early lead.

Trezvant top scored for the Wizards with 14 points and it was his experience and touch of class that really made the difference. He was ably assisted in his pursuit of an MVP medal by his team mates, with notable mentions going to point guard Stephen McAlister and team captain Rhys Jones.

The Wizards’ success has come early on in the lifecycle of a club that is still in its infancy.  The Junior Academy is approaching its 2nd Birthday with the Senior Men’s Team only formed in the summer of 2012.

Interest and participation in the senior section has grown steadily with coaching and training sessions being well attended on Wednesday Nights at Wilmslow High School’s Olympic Hall from 8pm – 10pm. The doors are always open to new members and those wanting more details on either the Senior or Junior clubs should feel free to contact Wizards CEO Deb Wheeler on 07984 406001.
