Wilmslow set for another spring clean

Following on from Wilmslow's first Spring Clean last May, the Town Council has decided to organise a similar event this year.

They will lead the operation to spring clean the town during the last week of April and hope that businesses and volunteers will come together to help smarten up the town's, gardens, hedges, verges and pavements.

The event will take place during the week commencing 29th April and the Town Council have set up a budget of £1000, part of which will be spent on banners to enable them to publicise the event.

The Town Council has also set up a working group to consider an ongoing programme for keeping the town tidy and will be inviting Dott Flint, who runs a team in Sandbach, to attend a future meeting and share her experiences with them.

Last year's event was described as "a modest success", which the Town Council is hoping to build upon and get more people involved to cover additional areas.

If you would like to get involved in the Wilmslow Spring Clean email Matthew Jackson, Town Clerk or call 01625 402907.

Am i missing something, dont i pay council tax for them to upkeep the town? Perhaps instead of them wasting £1000 on printing banners they could pay the staff who work for them to do what they should be doing anyway? Havent we had this before, thousands of pounds spent on signs we dont need?

Perhaps a few of the many highly paid officials in the councils would like to donate their time and some of their salary to this worthy cause.

I agree with Mark, this is nonsense. We are nearly in March and the pavement outside the health centre is still covered in leaves. Where are the cleaners?

I think we should end the contract with street scene as they are not cleaning wilmslow streets.
Rubbish is continually dropped or thrown into or put in hedges by wilmslow high school children on holly road north, south, parkway and broadway . The amount of times i have asked the head to help and engage the council and the endless calls to street scene . May i add its not just children, its parents emptying the cars and employees of local businesses.Often when driving into bramhall and stockport i am amazed how tidy the borough is kept clean . I see leaves collected and blown from payments and off the grass verges. Well done stockport council. Why cant we just pay less on council tax and manage and hire our own services. But of course that would be too intelligent and good business management and cost saving ideas. Its the supply chains that needs to be addressed . Its really that simple or or just don't get it

Alternatively we could all stop whingeing about it being someone else's problem and get on with helping to clean the place up.

Mark. I was one of the 4 only, volunteers to turnout last year,to clean the town,Haha! At the start. The photoshoot for the 'Express' had all the Councillors,Clerks, and usual hangers on. More of them thas Us.After the photos, most disappeared to leave us four oldies to cover from Chapel Lane, Alderley Rd,South St with the Library,Romany park, Grove St etc. Guess whose photos got in the Express?...Yes!! not the workers. all the dignataries.I have been chasing the Parish Council, to get their act together, and clean the leaves etc from Autumn.I also pointed out how Stockport Council have men. Yes guys with brushes, shovels.and one on Cheadle Hulme on his knees with a pan and brush...Good lad!.The road sweepers have gone back to Ches.East.We have no men working the town cleaning. Only guy works for Emerson / Orbit and he clears all their shop ,office fronts. I agree the town is pretty disgusting, compared to Knutsford,Bramhall,Poynton,WHY??????

I am with Sara, it would only take each householder a few minutes to sweep the pavement and drainage gully in front of their property and remove the debris. Maybe a little longer to trim their hedge back closer to the property line. In some places, these expanding hedges are restricting the available pavement to half width. Pref before April 28th.
Those who do wish to clean up their local area on this weekend, could submit their names to the Town Clerk, (402097) so effort can be co-ordinated , with poss loan of brushes, shovels, litter-pickers and refuse bags. eg volunteer pairs to walk and de-clutter Knutsford Rd, Gravel La, Moor La, Bedells La/Hawthorn St, Alrincham Rd to Boddington Arms and Racecourse Rd/Oak La
Any volunteers?
Ward Town Councillors' welcomed.

Cliff Road is an ongoing eyesore. It appears that a large number of children, on their way home from school, are making use of the new 'cheap' fast food outlet on Grove Street and then disposing of the empty cartons along this tree lined road on their way home to the Lacey Green area. It is an area that definately needs attention, otherwise Wilmslow might find itself with the fattest squirrels in Cheshire! I'm sure that chips cannot be good for them!

Sara and dave the issue is about having systems in place for daily cleaning not just odd ones. May i say its better then not having one at all
The fact remains the council is not managed well and weaknesses are all too apparent.

Rehanna, I hear what you and others are saying, but even in the halcyon days of CCC, every street was not swept daily. If the mechanical road sweeper/gully cleaner appeared, it missed several stretches ,due to on-street parked vehicles. Next seen in 5 yr.
Perhaps convicted offenders with a Community Service Order should be given a brush, shovel and street cleaners cart? Any clean-up, pref in Oct,would be a lot easier if householders maintained their public frontage.
