Handforth Station wins special Jubilee award

Cheshire Best Kept Stations 2012 - Handforth

Handforth Station scooped another award at the 10th Cheshire Best Kept Stations awards night held at The Weaver Hall Museum in Northwich.

The station won the Diamond Jubilee Award, a special award to commemorate the Queen's Jubilee Year, in recognition of their eye-catching work with Wilmslow Grange Primary School. Year 3 school children were asked to express themselves with "art fit for the Queen" and their pictures were subsequently displayed in the station's booking office.

Mike Bishop, chair of the Station Friends, said "The Friends of Handforth Station are very pleased to win the Diamond Jubilee Award. I must thank all those that have contributed to making Handforth a winning station this year and in previous years since the Competition began in 2003.

"We must extend a special thank you to the pupils from Wilmslow Grange Primary School who, with their artwork, have helped us win this special Diamond Jubilee Award in regal style. Their stunning array of pictures and paintings must have certainly impressed the judges and we look forward to working with all the community, especially the schools, in our aim to be amongst the Best in Cheshire again this year. "

Chelford Railway Station won this year's top title as Cheshire's Best Kept Station, impressing the judges due to the vast improvements made since village volunteers began caring for the station six years ago.

Lee Wasnidge, Area Director for Northern Rail praised the vital role of volunteers on the Mid-Cheshire and Crewe to Manchester Line for their support in making these stations stand head and shoulders above the rest, "Our volunteers recognise the importance of the contributions of all our partners in creating warm and welcoming environments for passengers at our stations. We're thrilled to see their hard work, dedicated and passion for their local communities honoured."

The awards, now in its tenth year, is a community partnership that encourages cleaner, tidier and more hospitable stations in Cheshire. Over 90 guests attended the evening including the Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire and four local mayors.
