Jones Homes are proposing to build a development of 175 homes in Handforth.

The company are currently carrying out a pre-planning consultation to gather the views of the community prior to submitting a planning application to Cheshire East Council.

The development of detached and mews homes will be located on land to the south of Coppice Way and west of the A34, which was identified as 'Site A' in the recent Town Strategy Consultation. Access for vehicles to the site will be from Coppice Way.

Letters have been sent to local residents who are being invited to submit their comments on the proposed development by Wednesday 2nd January. Comments can be emailed to [email protected] or sent to: Planning Department, Emerson House, Heyes Lane, Alderley Edge, SK9 7LF.

In addition, as reported on wilmslow.co.uk earlier this month, Cheshire East Council are proposing to build a development of 2300 homes on largely unused green belt land to the east of the A34 Handforth bypass.

Speaking about the proposed new settlement, Deputy leader Cllr David Brown said "This largely self-contained settlement would create a new sustainable community of around 2,300 homes built around the existing office and leisure facilities located at the site. It will provide further employment opportunities and a good range of community facilities for future residents, as well as the potential for new secondary school facilities, which could provide a more-conveniently located facility for use by the existing Handforth community.

"We propose to continue to preserve the existing small gap between Handforth and Heald Green to prevent the town merging with Greater Manchester, and the existing small gap between Handforth and Wilmslow to prevent the towns from merging further.

"The land set aside or "safeguarded" for future development by existing planning policy between Hill Drive and the A34 is now proposed to be largely used for public open space."

Cheshire East Council has prepared a Development Strategy to identify a five-year supply of housing land so they can meet their housing obligations. This strategy will be published for consultation early in the new year.

Cllr David Brown added "We feel we have listened already to many people's views – but we still want to learn and understand more and obtain different perspectives on these issues. Where there are difficult decisions to be made I will be meeting residents and others personally to fully understand the concerns."

Perhaps those of us living in Handforth should be negotiation with Stockport MBC to see if they would protect our green belt and if they would then looking for a referendum to take Handforth (and its publicly owned land) out of the clutches of Cheshire East who appear to see it as a bank account to finance projects in other parts of the county and protect politically difficult decisions on housing in other areas.

Agree totally with Chris Wigley's comments. We are closer to the Town Hall of Stockport than Cheshire East so it makes much more sense and from what I have heard and read they seem to listen and respect public opinion and the need to retain our green belt for future generations than Cheshire East.

Another 250+ cars a day on the by-pass and the roundabouts at Handforth Dean?? The M&S roundabouts are busy at most times of the day, but having these roundabouts as the only access to 175 homes seems crazy to me. The only “public” transport available is the free buses to Tesco arriving around 10 to 11:30 and leaving between 12 and 1pm. Not much use to residents of the new estate.
Cllr David Brown said he wants “to learn and understand more and obtain different perspectives on these issues.” So why do we have to "email comments to or sent them to: Planning Department, Emerson House"?
