West End success for youth theatre group

Finn Youth, the Wilmslow group based at Pownall Hall Theatre, have achieved another big success this week after learning that a play written by one of the group's founders is to be staged in London's West End.

Luke Gilfedder's script 'Trash' was a winning response to a call-out for playwrights who wanted to be performed in one of the world's most famous showbiz districts.

The play will premiere at the Tristan Bates theatre in Covent Garden on the 17th December, when Luke will become one of the youngest writers to have their work performed on the West End.

The success comes only two months after the group was praised by Sir Nicholas Hytner of the National Theatre as 'ballsy', and three months after a sell-out production at Manchester's Royal Exchange of Luke's first play 'That's Jam'. They have also performed two shows at Pownall Hall in that time, Private Lives and The Bolshevik Empress, both of which were well-received by Wilmslow's theatre-goers.

Luke said "It's more great news not just for me but for the group. I think we are already a success after this first year - no matter what happens next - and that's an extraordinary feeling for people our age.

"Aside from me and Angus Macalister who always get the credit, there are the other members from Wilmslow like Kassim Bahsoon, Oli Celensu, Tom Sneyd, Angus Russell... the list goes on of the unusually talented people who have made this group as independent, as successful, and as well presentable as it is.

"It's just about the writing though this time with the West End play - it'll be a new experience for me as I'm not involved in the production like with the full-on Finn Youth shows - so I'm looking forward to just catching the train down to London and enjoying the show!"
