Wilmslow Motor Show proves a huge success

The sun shone on the first ever Wilmslow Motor Show, which was a huge success on Saturday, 22nd September, attracting thousands of people to the town centre.

The Show was the brainchild of Steve Kennedy, owner of MailBoxes Etc and organised by Wilmslow Business Group to encourage people to come into Wilmslow and generate more business for the town.

Steve said: "The concept of the Show was to showcase luxury and top-end cars down the main pedestrianised street in Wilmslow, and then use that spectacle and the footfall it would generate, to showcase Wilmslow and it's retail and restaurant offerings."

Highlights of the day included the super car parade, which completed two circuits of the town centre, and professional racing car driver Oliver Webb who chatted to visitors and allowed children to sit in the BAC Mono supercar which was made in Holmes Chapel.

Adrian Lea, owner of Energie Fitness, organised the event on behalf of Wilmslow Business Group. He said "The Motor Show was a great day out for families, as well as petrol heads. There were 40 luxury cars placed down the main pedestrianised road, giving visitors an opportunity to have a look at the cars and chat to the dealers."

The car brands on show included: Jaguar, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Audi, BMW, Mini, Revere, Rolls Royce, Bentley, McLaren, Maserati, Ferrari, Aston Martin and Range Rover.

Sponsors Etihad Airways also brought their Formula 1 car to the Show which was on display in Banks Square and three local residents provided trips in their own cars in return for a donation to Sporting Bears. Visitors enjoyed a ride in a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, Lamborghini Diablo or a Bentley GT, raising £1,400 for Sporting Bears which raises money for children's charities.

The Show was compered by Wilmslow resident and Radio 6 DJ, Chris Hawkins.

Catherine Mackenzie, Chairman of Wilmslow Business Group, commented: "The team who organised the Show all have their own businesses, so it's been a demanding time for us all, particularly Steve Kennedy and Adrian Lea who have really driven the Show over the past few months. Nevertheless following Saturday's success we are already talking about next year's Motor Show."

Well done to all involved. Some of my friends came from as far away as Chorton and Gorton (Suburbs of Manchester). I wonder who travelled the furthest, and where from?

Rotarian Peter Friend had a free blow dry when the Lamborghini revved up in front of him, a perk of being a steward at the Motor Show;-) I ordered the yellow Bentley open top as a birthday present from my friend Rotarian Bernard Davies who then had to be recussitated;) Not what he had expected from being a steward! Thank God he recovered after having checked his wallet...;-)

Excellent comment Marianne, i can just imagine that!! We would like to thank Rotarians hugely for their support, we knew putting you amongst the Lambo's would be right up your street. Seriously though, your credibility helping us run the Sporting Bears charity ride outs from the pit lane was important, the management of any project is about right people, right skills, right place and you all delivered as we knew you would. Their final tally for CAFT was around £1800 and what a noisy, colourful and emotive way to do it, bears and children and adults waving from the supercars. Our idea of the pitlane was massively enhanced by the straw bales from the lovely people at Shentons farm shop. Modern cars + that little retro vibe, no Goodwood we know, but all the little tiny details helped add to the whole. Thanks Rotarians.

All the praise goes to you and Adrian for coming up with this fantastic event for Wilmslow and for carrying it out in a truly magnificent way. You really put Wilmslow on the map.

Fantastic for local businesses too. Coffee shops, takeaways and restaurants seemed to be booming and no doubt visitors from further afield will have taken note of what great shops we have in Wilmslow and will return.

What a great tally for CAFT to help autistic children have a fun day out, and what a great day for Wilmslow people - all free of charge! The Rotarians all had a whale of a time.

Our petrol-head friends came from Sandiway near Northwich. Adults and children all enjoyed it very much. Our girls got to meet the Manchester City mascots which just about made their day!! Being a new Wilmslow resident I think this event was great for the town just like the Artisan Market which we also love. Well done to all involved in this great event.

The members of Th Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean are well used to the lively wit of Past President Marianne Martyn. It would have been nice to have completed her Birthday present. Perhaps another time. I did in fact win a Lottery prize (£10) I can put that aside for the deposit

My husband and I came down with my mum. She lives in Stockport, so not the furthest away, but at 91, maybe the oldest? She loved the Lambos and wanted a ride, but after careful thought we decided that although we could probably manage to lower her in, getting her out might be a different story! Congratulations to all concerned, and a great total for charty!

Congratulations Steve and Adrian and everyone else involved in the organisation. So sorry I missed it, feedback has been really good.
I believe Revolution recorded their highest takings EVER, day and night.
Hope you have plans to repeat in 2013
