Victoria Pendleton disqualified in team sprint

Wilmslow cyclist Victoria Pendleton and her teammate Jessica Varnish missed out on a gold or silver medal today as they were disqualified from the women's team sprint race.

Having set a new world record in the first round, which was subsequently broken by the Chinese, the British pair were set to compete against China in the final.

However, they were relegated by officials for a technical infringement and denied a place in this afternoon's final after they made an illegal change over during their semi-final against Ukraine.

The crowds in the velodrome booed loudly when the decision was announced following a discussion between the judges and Dave Brailsford, performance director of the British cycling team.

Speaking after the disqualification Victoria, 31, told the BBC they have never really had an illegal change and were probably a bit too overwhelmed and a bit too eager.

Fingers crossed for our local hero later in the week, as the World and Olympic champion races in the keirin on Friday and the match sprint, which starts on Sunday.
