A Wilmslow school is celebrating after scooping an award for their recycling and energy-saving campaign.

Ashdene Primary School has been awarded the top prize for its Junior Recycling Officers (JROs) who promoted the Council's Silver Bin scheme using junk models,

Finalists from six Cheshire East schools battled it out to impress the judges, who were representatives from Cheshire East Council and Groundwork Cheshire, during a presentation held at Quarry Bank Mill in Styal.

Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member in charge of the environment, who was one of the judges, said: "Our JROs and JEMs enjoy a very busy and productive time in their position and serve a vital role in Cheshire East Council's work to boost recycling and reduce energy consumption.

"These children really did impress with their inventive approaches to recycling and energy-saving.

"What's great about the JRO and JEM schemes is that these young people can spread this important message to their parents and grandparents."

All finalists received a dynamo radio and a medal. Winning schools took home a shield to hold for the year. The individual winning pupils received either a mountain bike or cycle shop vouchers.

So far 70 per cent of Cheshire East primary schools have JEMs; 91 per cent have JROs.
