A brave family man from Wilmslow has inspired a group of friends to put together a campaign to raise £50,000 for charity.

Adam Broadbent, 44, who is terminally ill with brain and lung cancer is the inspiration behind the 505050 Challenge which will involve 50 runners, or teams, running 50 miles in order to raise £50,000 for The Christie.

Adam's wife Heather Broadbent explained "He was originally given a prognosis of 3 to 6 months but with the help from the amazing staff and ground breaking treatment from The Christie he is still going strong and has been fighting terminal brain and lung cancer for 15 months."

The fundraising campaign is spearheaded by Wilmslow business man Simon Hayward, who launched the campaign on his 50th birthday.

The run will be held in Macclesfield on Saturday 8th September. Individual runners can run a flat 50 mile point-to-point route, starting and finishing in Macclesfield, or teams of up to five can share a 50 mile challenge, split into five ten mile loops.

Heather said "Thanks to our generous sponsors and volunteers, every penny of the £500 sponsorship money will to go to The Christie, the largest cancer research and treatment centre in Europe.

"All runners can enjoy the camping facilities if required, a celebratory post run hog roast party, great goody bags and a carnival atmosphere!"

If you would like to take part, and think you can raise £500 in sponsorship, either as a solo runner or part of a team, the group would love to hear from you.

If you are more of a cyclist than a runner you can also take part in the 505050 Challenge as the group are organising a 50 mile bike ride on Sunday 14th October.

The looped route starts on the edge of Macclesfield and includes mountain biking on mixed terrain such as forest tracks, as well as on and off road sections.

Email [email protected] if you would like to take part and can raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship for The Christie.

Heather added "We are also hoping to encourage people to do 50 of their own things even if they can't run. For example my dad, who is a keen birdwatcher, is doing a sponsored bird watch hoping to see 50 different birds in 24 hours. Others could wash 50 cars, bake 50 cakes, stay quiet for 50 minutes or read 50 books."
