Girl Guides get ready for 2012 Games

Girl Guides from the Wilmslow District celebrated the spirit of the Olympic games when 150 girls and adults enjoyed an afternoon of activities.

The event, organised by their leaders, was held at Wilmslow High School on Sunday, 8th July.

It opened with the reading of a letter from Sebastian Coe KBE who thanked all those present for helping to make his dream a reality by coming together in friendship and respect and sharing the Olympic Spirit. He sent his congratulations on being fantastic ambassadors for the Olympic Movement.

Lynn Bond said "The girls worked together to create wall hangings, challenged themselves by trying a new sport and at the end paraded with medals, flags and torches for a memorable finale dance."

Rainbow Guides tried volley ball, cheerleading and fencing, while Brownies, Guides and the senior section girls had a go at judo, tag rugby and fencing taster sessions led by instructors.

The units in Wilmslow have been working on Girlguiding UK's 'On Your Marks...' an activity resource, which is to inspire its members to be part of the London 2012 Games and its values. All those who attended were presented with a badge created for the resource.

Girlguiding UK has invited young members and volunteers to get involved in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games celebrations to encourage them to be active, to learn about the cultures of different countries around the world and to explore the values that underpin the Olympic and Paralympic movements.
