Two town centre businesses close

A restaurant and a clothes shop have both closed their doors in the town centre.

Henri Lloyd shut its shop on Alderley Road on Thursday June 28th, after four and a half years of trading in Wilmslow.

Martin Strzelecki, joint CEO, told wilmslow.co.uk "We had a break in the lease and chose to exercise it.

"The location was slightly off pitch and having an empty unit next door and a fish and chip shop on one side did not help."

Martin added "It hasn't traded brilliantly for us and we exercised a break that makes sense. If there hadn't been a break in the lease though we would have continued trading."

A couple of days later Felicini closed on the corner of Water Lane and Hawthorn Street.

Local residents were surprised to discover that the Italian restaurant had closed without warning. The sign was removed from the building, all the windows covered and the Wilmslow restaurant listing removed from the company website.

No sign was placed at the premises explaining the closure, and at the time of publishing no comment has been received from the company regarding the closure of the Wilmslow restaurant.

Closure of local businesses can only have a detrimental effect on the town, as people won't want to invest in Wilmslow, and rows of empty premises are disheartening. At the Wilmslow vision meetings earlier this year the point was made that shop rents and rates are too expensive, certainly for the truly independents. Could Wilmslow town council look at this to see if business rates could be reviewed? We risk Wilmslow becoming a ghost town.
Thank goodness for the artisan market!

These outlets are just two others in a long list that have closed over the years. It's about time the council realised what is happening to this town with their vastly over priced leases. Wildings being a prime example. When I was growing up in the 70's grove street was a bustling high street, sadly it is now a shadow of its former self...just ridiculous!!
