Garden Day raises £10,000 for Wilmslow Wells

Wilmslow Wells for Africa held their annual Garden's Day on Saturday, 30th June, which proved a great success.

Twenty privately-owned local gardens opened for the charity's major fundraiser of the year which raised £10,090. This sum includes a donation of £2000 received anonymously, but intended to be added to the total in recognition of the immense amount of hard work that so many people contributed towards the success of the day.

Helen Battilana, Chairman of Wilmslow Wells, said "It is 20 years since we held our first Gardens Day and it has become an annual event for many years now. Visitors come from all over Greater Manchester and Cheshire to enjoy the immaculate private gardens, both large and small. Our Gardeners tell us that, whilst it is exhausting chatting to the hundreds of people who call in, they are so pleased with the compliments and interest shown by the visitors.

"Providing refreshments is a key aspect of the event. Once again, the charity's hard-working supporters served delicious lunches and tempting home-made cakes at the Knutsford Road Church Rooms. Six of the Gardeners found time to offer a variety of snacks to sustain people touring the gardens - including bacon baps, cream teas and the opportunity to decorate your own cup cakes."

Despite the showery weather, a lot of visitors decided that cycling around the 20 gardens was the easiest way to get around. The largest group of cyclists was a party of 11, led by sisters Celia Pyrah and Maggie Parker, pictured above.

The Trustees of Wilmslow Wells now have the task of deciding which further projects to fund so that clean water can be supplied to more needy African villagers. As always, they consider every proposal carefully to ensure that good value is secured for the charity's financial backing. Supporters are reassured that over 99% of assets are spent directly on vital projects to provide safe, clean water.
