Dean Oaks children learn a lot from allotment visit

Children from Dean Oaks Primary School attend a weekly Gardening Club with volunteers from Incredible Edible Wilmslow.

The Year 3, 4 and 5 children dig in each week to tend their school beds, borders and school allotment site. This week they were treated were treated to a visit to the Dean Row Allotments on Lincoln Road, only 5 minutes walk from their school.

The idea of the visit was for the children to link what they do in school on a small scale, to the way people use the land to feed themselves throughout the year.

Teacher and DOPS Gardening Club leader Ms Bandrés said "It was great fun. The children loved seeing all the vegetables and fruit growing and were very excited by it all."

Courgettes, currants and gooseberries were just some of the foods that a lot of the children didn't recognise but had a taste and loved them. One of the boys was inventing his own recipe on the way back to school, for pumpkin and apple casserole.

The Allotment Society has set up a website with a forum for growers to ask questions and chat to other growers, supporting each other with ideas and skills.

Allotment volunteer Terry Brown who organised this event, added "It was lovely to see the children's enthusiasm and I hope this is the start of an excellent link with school."
