The Olympics comes to Wilmslow

The torch may only have made is to Macclesfield, Knutsford and Stockport but the spirit of the Olympics made it to Wilmslow and was exemplified by the children of all our local primary schools. The brainchild of local head Darren Morgan from Lindow Primary, 12 events were organised at local venues for children of all abilities.

Mr Morgan said: “I’m overwhelmed by the level of support and enthusiasm the event has generated, all schools were keen to participate, people gave their time freely and venues waived their charges to ensure the children could enjoy the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.”

As well as the traditional Olympic sports, athletics; swimming, gymnastics, hockey, tennis, table tennis and basketball; the paralympic sports of goalball and boccia, there was also a place for cross country and indoor bowls.

In preparation for the events, all children in all schools were invited to run, jump and throw with the results collated to give a snapshot of the ability of this generation of primary school children. “The event has been such a success that hopefully it will become a regular fixture in Wilmslow in future Olympic years” said Mr. Morgan.

Was there an overall winner?  “Yes, but that’s not the point”, he added, “it was all about taking part and inspiring the children to watch the games in London and dream of taking part in 20 years time!”

What a fantastic idea to foster interest in the games, what they stand for and a sense of pride in the children of Wilmslow! Well done Mr. Morgan and all the people involved in putting on this event. Here's to many more!
