Wilmslow prepares to bloom

With only three weeks left until the RHS judges come to Wilmslow, to assess the town for the North West in Bloom competition, preparations are well underway.

Wilmslow will be competing against other similar sized towns across the North West and will be marked against criteria such as design, colour and presentation. However, horticulture is only part of the picture, the marking system also looks at environmental responsibility such as, recycling, litter, graffiti, signage, art in the landscape and further points can be gained where community participation is well united.

Ashdene Primary School ran a poster competition to help promote the town's entry and ten winners were selected by Peter Robinson, chairman of The Wilmslow & Alderley Edge Horticultural Society. The lucky winners have had their designs reproduced and distributed around the town centre for all to see.

Helen Yates, of Incredible Edible Wilmslow, said "This entry is a real conglomeration of effort across the town from many community groups.

"Volunteers have been planting in the Incredible Edible Community plots, the Town Council organised the Spring Clean in late May, which involved litter picking, drain clearing and weeding paths, communal areas and building fronts. Transition Wilmslow are working through plans for a community garden on the site of the orchard planted this winter, just off Gravel Lane, and Friends of the Carrs have been continuing their work to keep The Carrs park in such a well maintained condition.

"Wilmslow Business Group have been promoting Edible In Bloom to businesses and several are making their premise front look literally good enough to eat.

"Water Lane is the first of Wilmslow's streets to get their planting out and we're hoping there will be many more businesses, churches, schools and homes that begin to do the same over the next few weeks to unite us in our theme of edible planting. There are groups all over town working hard to give the community of Wilmslow a sense of pride and encourage us all to take an active role in taking care of our town together. And to add to the buzz the Rotary Scarecrow competition has also begun in these last weeks leading up to the Wilmslow Show and the high streets are feeling quite fun now."

The In Bloom judging will take place on Wednesday 11th July when judges will be given a tour of Wilmslow, meet the people involved and be treated to a display of all the exciting things going on behind the scenes leading up to the entry.

Heln added "So if you haven't already started your pots, planters and baskets, why not join us and choose herbs, fruit or vegetables for a display that is beautiful and useful?"

If you would like to get involved, Incredible Edible volunteers will meet outside Wilmslow Library at 2pm Sunday 1st July to get the community plots ready. Visit www.incredible-edible-wilmslow.co.uk for further information.
