Scarecrows of all shapes and sizes are set to take to the streets of Wilmslow this week as the town gets ready for the third Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival.

Over 100 straw creations are expected to be on display from Friday, 22nd June, for 17 days - bringing colour and fun to the town.

They will be found hanging out on the streets, on display in shops windows, lurking in hidden corners and even positioned high on the rooftops.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean and members of the Wilmslow Business Group, the Wilmslow Scarecrow Festival will once again transform the town - providing a really fun event for families to enjoy.

The scarecrows will remain on show until Saturday 7th July and a treasure hunt will be available from Tuesday, 26th June, for families to take part in.

The Grand Scarecrow Parade, with the Batala Drumming Band from Lancaster, will take place on Saturday 30th June. If you missed it last year I would recommend it - they were certainly loud, fun and created a fantastic atmosphere.

The Batala Drumming Band will set off from Sainsbury's at 11am on Saturday 30th June, and make their way along Alderley Road and down Grove Street to Bank Square. They will make another appearance at 2pm, setting off from Bank Square and travelling up Grove Street, along Water Lane and back, crossing at Barclays Bank and back down Grove Street to finish at Bank Square.

Organiser Geoff Shelmerdine commented "The Batala leader said they really enjoyed the 'buzz' of this route and the enthusiasm of the people of Wilmslow and asked us if they could come back again this year. So get your ear plugs and dancing shoes ready."

The festival will culminate with a grand display of selected scarecrows at the Wilmslow Show on Sunday 8th July, at the Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club stand where the final judging will take place.

All monies raised are used by the Rotary Club of Wilmslow Dean in the community to support local charities and worthy causes.

Geoff Shelmerdine said "Apart from being known as 'Mr Scarecrow' (I'm not that scary really) my greatest pleasure as the organiser is seeing the imagination and creativity put into each scarecrow by business staff, schools and churches etc, who take part.

"And then seeing the smiles and excitement displayed by children - and adults as they spot one in a shop window, hanging from a ledge or skulking round a corner.

"It is also pleasing to know that the Scarecrow Festival (now in its 3rd year) has been accepted into the annual calendar of events for the town. Businesses are beginning to understand the power of local public relations and that being involved and supporting community events such as this one can positively effect their profits and standing in Wilmslow.

"The Wilmslow Dean Rotary Club work hard supporting the community and together with the Wilmslow Business Group hope to build the event each year providing we have continued support from retailers and of course the local schools etc."

My daughters were really excited to see their first scarecrow on the way home from gymnastics yesterday. Do let us know us know about your favourite scarecrows as you spot them around the town, using the comment box below.

Also please do forward any photos you take to [email protected] as we will be putting together a gallery of scarecrows over the coming week.
