Secret garden celebrates 10 years of charity openings

This year celebrates the tenth year that 9 Bourne Street has opened for the charities supported by the National Garden Scheme.

The ‘secret garden’ as many people who have visited it describe it, first appeared in the famous yellow book a decade ago. The winding paths, beautiful azaleas, rhododendrons, mature trees and secret area’s have been charming young and old every May since opening to the public.

Melanie Harris is the third head gardener from the same family who has cherished this hidden haven in Wilmslow since her grandfather Joe Sumner started the garden back in 1924. The garden was then nurtured and enlarged by Rodger Sumner, a local artist and textile designer.

This year willow weaver Juliette Hamilton will be demonstrating the art of willow weaving, there will be items for sale too, and there will also be plants for sale.

Tea and cake will be on sale on both days and a children’s trail should provide further entertainment for the younger garden visitors.

9 Bourne Street opens on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May from 11.00am to 5.00pm with the entrance fee of £3.50 for adults and children given free admission.

Further details about the garden can be found on their website www.wilmslowgarden.co.uk.

It was a great weekend and we would like to thank all our garden visitors and helpers. We raised £1706.86 for National Garden Scheme charities over the two days we opened to the public.
