Be on your guard following rise in deception and distraction thefts

Police in Wilmslow are advising local residents and businesses to be vigilant following a spate of attempted distraction thefts and deception.

The descriptions of offenders vary but tend be women believed to be eastern european and in their 30s and 40s, sometimes with children.

Last week wilmslow.co.uk reported on a number of mobile phone thefts, particularly from tables in local bars and restaurants. iPhones were stolen in Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Knutsford while offenders distracted victims by placing leaflets over the phones or asking for directions.

This week, a beauty salon and hair salon in Wilmslow were targeted by women attempting to use £50 notes suspected of being fake. Due to the suspicion aroused in staff, neither of the salons accepted the notes.

Sgt Andy Miller said: "Police are aware of the rise in deception and distraction thefts in the Knutsford and Wilmslow areas. Local businesses have been advised and patrols have been increased to provide reassurance.

"People should take basic steps to protect themselves such as keeping personal items out of sight and secure. Be aware of those around you and report suspicious activity to police.

"No violence has been used in any of the incidents reported to police."
