Basketball: Wizards work their magic at Spring Hoopfest

Hoopfest Wilmslow Wizards

Local basketball club the Wilmslow Wizards saw off tough competition across Cheshire East to win both the U12’s and U16’s at Cheshire East Basketball Forum’s ‘Spring Hoopfest 2012’.

The tournament was held at Holmes Chapel Leisure Centre on Sunday 25th March.

The U12’s had an apprehensive start, though as confidence grew they played as a team, showed determination and worked hard. Strong defence from Ibrahim Ghaznavi and Will Abbott and two spectacular baskets from Yasir Al-Shabibi took them into the final.

What a thrilling final it was, with Jack Joyce hitting the winning shot in the final seconds of the game to lift the shield.

The Wizards U16’s, currently undefeated in the league, once again cast their spell, four games, four victories, saw them into the final against Alsager.

Some exciting inside play from Rohem Hekmet, timely rebounding from Joe Moran and three point shooting from Tom Russell and Harry Palmer-Brown kept the crowds captured.

Wilmslow Wizards Basketball Club’s Head of Coaching, former professional John Trezvant, said afterwards, “Wow, what a great tournament, the level of basketball was good to see. I’d like to thank all the parents for showing their support and contributing to a great atmosphere.”
