Lindow pupils rise to the challenge

Pupils from Lindow Community Primary School learnt all about one of our most loved staple foods - bread - when they were visited by Cheshire-based family baker Roberts Bakery.

The visit formed part of a Design and Technology module in the school's curriculum. Twenty eight pupils from Years 5 and 6 took an exciting virtual tour of Roberts' state-of-the-art bakery and picked up some fascinating facts on how bread reaches our shelves - from sourcing the raw ingredients to packaging design and transport.

The children then donned some special Roberts Bakery aprons and got stuck in to making some bread of their own.

Rachel Pengelly, teacher at Lindow Community Primary School, said: "This visit from Roberts Bakery was very valuable in helping our children to learn about the many aspects of a business. The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Roberts Bakery and were fascinated about where all the ingredients in bread come from. Of course, they especially liked baking the bread and experiencing hands on how the appliance of a bit of science can help them make something really delicious."

Keith Birkett of Roberts Bakery added: "This was a fantastic visit and it's so rewarding for the children to take an interest in how the company has changed in the 125 years since it was established and to see how a loaf they see in their home every day is made. The pupils obviously got a lot out of the sessions and really enjoyed making the bread and then tasting the fruits of their labour."
