Wilmslow Wells for Africa held their first Souperday of the year on Thursday, 16th February at St John's Church Rooms on Knutsford Road.

Approximately 150 supporters came to the event where they were able to choose from four different flavours of soup and a variety of interesting breads – all of which were home-made. The cake stall proved hard to resist and both the raffle and good-as-new stalls were busy too.

The sum of £1277 was raised which will be used to fund more projects to supply clean safe water to African villagers.

The charity's Chairman, Helen Battilana, told those attending about the very gratifying completion report just received about a recent project at Buyala village, near Jinja in Uganda.

Helen said "That community now has a newly dug and capped well supplying clean water, but it was not the case before when the villagers only had a hole in the ground with filthy water containing worms, insect larvae and life-threatening bacteria. The local people have also received information on how to maintain this new source of clean water, which will ensure a healthier and happier community."

Wilmslow Wells for Africa has funded more than 120 discrete projects since the charity was formed in the early 1980's, in sixteen different African countries. 99.2% of their total income has been spent directly on water projects.

The next fund raising event is Gardens Day on Saturday 30th June, when many private local gardens will be open for viewing. More details will be published on wilmslow.co.uk shortly.
