Flying the flag at Handforth station

As a part of an ongoing link with the Handforth railway station, students at Wilmslow High school created a new station flag.

Under the guidance of school staff members Mrs White and Mr Turrell, the students drew inspiration for the design from the flora on display at the station. The artists then designed by hand before using computer software to enhance their work and put the final design together.

Mike Bishop, Chairman of Friends of Handforth Station, said: "We are thrilled at Wilmslow High School's continuing involvement in our 'Platform for Art'. They designed our first flags which were raised by Martin Bell MP back in January 1999.

"We are particularly pleased with this latest flag which will make people look and think; it continues the colourful tradition of flag artworks blowing in the wind over Handforth station. There is another flag due for renewal and any school, group or individual member of the community is invited to submit a design flag for which there will be a prize to the winner of free travel on Northern Rail."

The Friends of the station are also celebrating receiving a grant from Handforth Parish Council towards various small projects including installing a plaque to commemorate the Prince of Wales' visit in 2010 and the creation of a further new flag.

Anyone interested in creating a flag design should send it to [email protected]. Flags designs need to be in portrait format with the height being twice the width.
