Two children hurt by firework at Wilmslow display

Two young children were injured when a firework shot into the crowd at a Wilmslow display.

The incident occurred just after 8pm at the bonfire and fireworks event at the Carnival Fields on Saturday, 5th November.

A four year-old girl was taken to hospital having received a burn to her arm and a six year-old boy was treated by paramedics at the scene after ashes went into his eye.

The girl has been transferred to Manchester Children's Hospital for treatment to a small but deep burn.

Wilmslow Bonfire and Fireworks Night is a charity event organised by Wilmslow and District Round Table in association with Ladies Circle, Imagine FM and other local organisations.

Police are currently investigating the incident.

Update: Tuesday 8th November 8am.

The police have confirmed this morning that there is no criminal investigation.

This incident appears to have been a very unfortunate accident as the rogue firework came from the display which was organised by a reputable company.

Oh dear...I'm glad we weren't there!!! You would think at these big organised events, that these things couldn't happen - they would make sure the fireworks are good quality, and only shoot off in the required direction.... Let's hope the little girl gets well soon.

Presuming this is the same incident I'm thinking of.... that drew the attention of staff and the display experts...... I was about 20 feet away, with friends even closer and this was not a "bad quality" firework or a "misplaced" firework but was thrown into the crowd from behind. It wasnt seen until it went off in the crowd and I nor others certainly did not see anyone react to a firework from over head. I saw one small firework fire off behind the bonfire but I doubt that this could have been the cause. Would be great to hear more on this as I don't think it is clear for some what actually happened.

Everyday you come across hazards & risks, therefore dealing with fireworks is also dangerous, and this is always recongised.

Therefore just to say that turning up anywhere always has its risks.
I was there, and i did see two firesworks one going into the hedge and the other jumping in to the croud.

But never or less; turning up anywhere has its risks.

Thanks, nice to have that cleared up. As you say, risks are ever present at such events and I hope those injured haven't suffered too much.

I was at the event, and it was a brilliant evening and very professionally done. It was a real shame about the injuries, and hope they are well very soon. However, I would like to add that fireworks are dangerous and no one can make an event 100% safe. It is a risk that everyone takes by attending such an event. Just hope that people don't just focus on the negative but also take into account that this was a charity event and £1000's was raised for local charities which they are in desperate in need of.....

This is an event organised by individuals who give up their spare time for free for the benefit of the public and various needy charities. They are NOT professional fundraisers - unlike various other organisations. It is very unfortunate that two children were hurt and I know that the guys from RT are devastated.
Shame on the people who gate crash this event without paying - yes some so-called respectable people of Wilmslow - you know who you are !!!! Don't hold parties your house and invite you friends to sneek in for free through your back gardens - how disgusting - and then subject the marshalls to vile abuse.
