Pay for parking by mobile phone

Pay by phone car parks 2

Motorists will shortly be able to take advantage of paying for parking via their mobile phone in some of the town's car parks.

The new payment option will be trialled from Monday, October 31st, at Broadway Meadow, South Drive (long and short stay car parks) and Spring Street multi-storey car park.

The service, supplied by RingGo, will enable drivers to pay for parking, using a mobile phone and credit or debit card, by calling 020 3046 0010.

Cheshire East Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental services, said: "We understand that motorists do not always have loose change available to pay for car parks. We wanted to give people the option of paying by phone. There is no need to carry any cash or use the ticket machine, you just need a mobile phone.

"You don't even need to put a ticket in your window, as our enforcement officers will be able to check that fees have been paid, using RingGo, via their handheld units. First-time users can register with RingGo by telephoning the service or by logging on to www.myringgo.co.uk/register.

"Should your meeting or shopping trip overrun, you can even give RingGo a quick call and extend your length of stay, without returning to your car.

"I hope motorists find that this trial has a positive impact on how they use local car parks."

As part of the initial trial, parking fees can also be paid by phone at the following car parks:

  • Alderley Edge: South Street and West Street.
  • Knutsford: King Street; Old Market Place; Princess Street; Silk Mill Street; and Tatton Street.
  • Macclesfield: Exchange Street; Gas Road; Macclesfield Railway Station; Waters Green; and Jordangate multi-storey car park.
  • Crewe: Pedley Street/Arthur Street; Railway Street; and Crewe Alexandra Football Club car park.

Payment by coins will still be available in these car parks.

Watch out, RingGo charge an additional 20p "Convenience Fee" on top of the parking charge. Also 10p per text for acknowledgements or when you want to extend your parking. So 1hours of parking could cost 90p vs 60p if you pay with cash.
But if you don't have any change, it's useful, and you can get VAT receipts online, good for company expenses.

RingGo looks especially useful when I have once again had to search for a ticket machine which actually works on Broadway Meadow car park! This morning i queued behind 8 people to get a ticket. The other machines were out of order on Friday, today is Tuesday and still not repaired. This is a regular occurence, I have complained on several occasions and I know others have. A new five day parking ticket was introduced recently but surely nobody would risk putting such a large amount of money in machines which frequently take money but produce no ticket!
Could it be that these two new innovations are just a ploy by Cheshire East to obtain more revenue and cut down on staff needed to empty the machines?
